Hello, here's a little bit about me and my artwork.
My real name is Daniel. Online I go by DethRules, as it's my official art tag. If anyone asks, I would say I'm from North Carolina, as I've lived there most of my life. However, I was born in Georgia but only lived there as a little baby. I did also spend half a decade living in West Texas in and near the Midland area. Shout out Oakwood. I've always been someone who has an interest in art, and I drew a lot growing up, but it wasn't until my freshman year of high school when I really started to become an artist. That's when I created Deth Rules.
See, I started this little mini-series of illustrations and doodles called Deth Rules. It was originally a satirical, overly exaggerated series of drawings that consisted of all sorts of edgy slop like "kill your girlfriend" with a lady's head on a post, drawn in a cartoonish kind of style. The cherry on top was the pentagram I used to use instead of the inverted star that I use now. The star now represents Philosophical Materialism instead of the satanic nonsense it was before. In high school I spent a lot of my time... most of my time... drawing instead of actually doing my work. So very quickly I shifted to drawing actual serious pieces, but still I needed a tag. I didn't wanna sign with my own name, but I couldn't come up with anything either. My at-the-time buddies of mine persistently suggested I use Deth Rules, and eventually I just decided to go with it. Needless to say, it stuck.
I would create an entire piece, then another, and another, getting better and better with each new piece. I did a lot of practicing and experimenting with different things like surrealism, landscapes, and monsters. I'm still practicing and experimenting with all of my new pieces as well, of course. Back in 2023 I had an untitled piece that would end up becoming my personal favorite. It got redrawn later that same year with an insane progression in skill and again in 2026. The piece was later titled "The Right To Destroy Ones Self At Will" sometime between the two redraws. It's supposed to represent how something can appear ugly but be beautiful underneath. For example, the title itself sounds morbid, but its real meaning is to break down the former self and build yourself anew. To put forth action into becoming something better and stronger. How exactly it relates to the piece I won't explain, because what fun is it to not leave things up to interpretation? This is something I love to do with my pieces and especially with my landscapes.
More on me and my inspirations. My biggest inspiration is Kentaro Miura and his artwork. More specifically, his artwork in "Berserk," which is my number one favorite piece of media ever. My favorite anime is the '97 anime, although Naoki Urasawa's "Monster" is a very, very close second. My favorite movie is "MirrorMask" from 2005. I'm a huge fan of all things medieval, and I'm also a big fan of dark fantasy. I obviously really like surrealism as well, but that doesn't really need to be pointed out, as these themes are prominent in most of my works. I also get a lot of inspiration from the vast variety of music I listen to, the band TOOL being a big one. My favorite band of all time, however, is Title Fight from Kingston, PA. They haven't played together in a long time, but here's hoping. A few other favorite bands of mine are Oakwood, Circa 40, and Train Breaks Down. Some of my favorite video games are Red Dead Redemption (1 & 2), KCD2, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Night in the Woods, Fran Bow, and many more. My list for games and music is extensive, so we'll leave it there.
So yeah, there's the icebreaker we all hated in school. If you're reading this, then I hope you learned something, got inspired, or even decide to check out some of the things that interest and inspire me! It took me several years of drawing before I really got to the point where I considered myself an artist, but time and practice really and truly do pay off, and you can do something great too! Whether it be clothing, art, music, or even making street food in a food truck at Walmart, you can make it happen. Pursue your passions, take breaks when needed, and never stop trying to improve on yourself and your work. Thank you so much for reading this and checking out my website. Much love! <3
